So, Trump’s stronger chart (I talked about that here) won out and the man with a criminal rap sheet is now about to take up the most powerful position of authority in the entire world. How’s THAT for a literal manifestation of Pluto anaretic in Capricorn! As well as being the first felon to make the seat, he’s also the oldest president ever. Capricorn relates to the elderly and Pluto rules Plutocrats, the Underworld. criminality, the ultra-rich, abuse and extremes. Capricorn/Saturn tends to go literal where it can. A quick glance across social media platforms shows people in the public eye, writers and journalists and campaigners and actors and more, refer to Trump as the shadow of humanity or the antichrist himself. In the aftermath of the election, racist texts were sent to vast numbers of black people in the States and a whole lot of ‘your body, my choice’ commentary began on social media as a highly offensive video was posted by Trump supporter Nick Fuentes. Yes, our collective shadow is now made flesh – real and tangible, undeniable.
Meanwhile Pluto shrugs and says, ‘you have work to do’. Because, as I said in a previous post, it’s not about who is president, it’s about the bigger pattern, the greater story, the over-arching themes in play. Whilst Pluto presents us with our greatest arch enemy (or saviour depending on which side you’re on), the system still must transform, the infrastructure needs to change, boundaries and borders need to change, toxic elements must be cast out and secrets must be exposed. Remember the Sabian symbol of this anaretic Capricorn degree is A Secret Meeting Of Men Responsible For Executive Decisions In World Affairs. Right about now I’m thinking of Musk and Trump with their heads together. Pluto just moved a chess piece into position, the only one left to play. Racism and sexism are getting worse. Natural disasters are getting worse. Demonization of others and (climate) denial are quick ways to abdicate responsibility. People in power are corrupt. The system itself rewards corruption. The system protects misogynists. The system doesn’t care whether the planet is plundered until she is frozen and weeping.
The whole situation has got me thinking, and a lot of other people talking, about the practice of astrology. Lots of astrologers predicted Harris to have an outright win. The polls agreed and many kicked back and waited for the expected outcome. But the outcome was entirely and utterly the opposite. But when Pluto moves into Aquarius, the gameboard changes. New pieces are on the table and there might be a rude awakening. Trump still has one Uranus conjunction to his midheaven to go in March. Let’s see how that unfolds but shocks at the top are possible. Not to mention that 2025 is a year of one change after another and another – Neptune and Saturn entering Aries, Uranus entering Gemini, Jupiter entering Cancer. 2025 is shaping up to be a very interesting period!
But still, back to my wandering point. This ‘who got it right or wrong’ predictive issue feels like it’s a fitting example of how not to use astrology. Because we’re dealing with big picture themes here, archetypal stories that are playing out across centuries, great beings with an agenda so vast and incalculable we cannot presume to know who wins this or that and why. Because it isn’t about the winning or losing, it’s about the unfolding story and that story shifts and changes with our own evolution as souls. The more we evolve, the easier the lessons are. Or we could simply say there is less resistance and a greater range of responses and possibilities. Sometimes hard lessons in life are necessary as these are the ones that are most important. If the lessons are super hard to learn then we’re not likely to forget them any time soon. It makes an impression upon us.
So, this is what Pluto is doing to us right now. He’s impressing upon us a lesson – something that will stick. Because things MUST change. When I say ‘things’ I mean us. WE must change for us to be able to deal with things to come – whether total collapse of the world order, asteroids, alien contact, the AI singularity, climate disaster, the development of telepathy…whatever. WE must evolve to stay current, to stay on the chessboard. Right now, we are so easily divided, so easily led, so easily fooled, so easily defeated, so easily disenchanted. All our negativity becomes a tangible force, oily, slick, heavy, dirty, suffocating dreams and slowing progress. As we move into the space age (the age of air!), for us to survive as a species, we need to pull our socks up. There are other ways to distribute power, other ways to organise society, other ways to choose our leaders. Simply – there are other ways to live, better ways. Ways that don’t kill the planet (or each other!).
Instead of constantly trying to predict worldwide events or indeed personal events, I often find it more prudent to focus on the underlying lesson. We get so hung up on the need to predict, the need to know but this is an expression of our fears. The human mind wants to know the future so that it can avoid the bad things. But sometimes it’s not as simple as that. Case in point – if Pluto enters your 7th house by transit you may meet someone who positively changes your life, or your current relationship might come to a close. Both are extremes of possibility and there are many shades and nuances in between. We can offer this range of possibilities to the client (or the wider world) gently and with careful regard to how that information might be received) and also humbly because WE ARE NOT GODS. Pronouncement of absolutes for social media clout does no one any good and does a disservice to astrology as a whole. If Pluto has overshadowed us maybe it’s because the brilliant ego has been shining too hard for too long.
We can only ever see part of the story simply because we do not have access to the cosmic tides until the end of time (and beyond!). What we see is like opening a gigantic book and peering at the dusty pages, trying to make sense of the story that’s told there without knowing exactly what happened before and after. As astrologers, we carefully ask the Gods to explain what they mean, translate and then come up with a story that most closely represents what they tell us. We are fallible. Sometimes we get it wrong. Sometimes we let our own desires get in the way. And sometimes people don’t want to hear it or they hear it differently than it was intended. Communication between us humans is complicated. Sometimes we’re only listening with our shadow. And sometimes, there are transcendent moments when the veil is pulled back entirely, and we catch a fleeting image of things to come in glorious technicolour. The chart becomes a doorway to higher consciousness, a mandala to focus on that frees intuition from the shackles of logic and ego.
Strangely as I edit these words, a vision comes to me as I type. I was pondering why so often in any election, it’s always pretty much always 50/50. Suddenly I find myself thinking that the light and shadow issues stems directly from our focus on duality. As we move more into the Age of Air, it is likely that we will become more educated, more focused on the development of the mind. Intellectual pursuits are likely to increase as automation frees us from manual labour. Perhaps we will find a way to make the unconscious conscious, or a way to use the whole of our brains without Pluto pulling levers behind a curtain. Trump’s focus on the black and the white of it (so to speak) may indeed be a symbolic reference in itself. For us to heal those divisions they must be clearly visible. We can’t heal what we don’t see.
Let’s not lose sight of what astrology is about. Let’s not lose sight of one another And definitely don’t lose sight of the potential for a brighter future. It’s always ‘darkest before dawn’. As we have just seen, everything can turn on a dime in a moment. Because if nothing else, Donald Trump has just given us a pitch perfect example of Pluto’s powers of regeneration. The proverbial phoenix has been born from the ashes. And if he can do it, anyone can.
