The works on my property have finally finished. Just as Mars left the shadow zone and heaved himself over my Ascendant after six months of languishing in my 12th house, everywhere is peaceful. I woke up with a bubble of happiness in my heart, not just because of the quiet but something indefinable, a feeling that maybe I can finally let myself have the things I want. Because sometimes I still find it hard to say yes to life. If like me, you have ever experienced depression, or you have a natural inclination towards that way of being, it can be difficult to trust yourself and therefore difficult to trust life. But as Mars chipped away at unconscious stuff that was polluting the waters of my imagination, I found myself feeling lighter, freer, more able, more willing to take care of myself, more willing to fight FOR myself…instead of just fighting myself!
The week ahead is quiet astrologically speaking. Of course, there are always aspects building up and winding down, long running stories, potent lessons. But this week, much of the focus is on the Nodal axis with connections from Ceres, Juno, and Hygeia. All the goddesses are stepping up, energies flowing into the hidden places, soft and receptive and yet at the same time as hard as diamonds, resilient as rocks. All of us are reminded that sometimes it is necessary to yield to the natural round of life, and this isn’t giving up – simply surrendering to the incoming tide. When the tide turns, then you will be ready to set sail, little boat bobbing under the sun, the warmth on your skin, fire in your heart.
The outer world of course continues to rush at breakneck speed, one catastrophe after another, one invention away from Armageddon or salvation. It’s all so big, said my friend on the phone the other day. So many awful things happening, so many corners to fight, causes to support, petitions to sign. Mercury in Aries keeps telling us to raise our voices. Occasionally the Moon hits a block, and we find ourselves thinking, what’s the point? Play the game says the cards. Play your part says Mars.
Of course, Trump, with his anaretic Leo Ascendant still looms larger than life. He is a cartoon version of himself, the big bad at the end of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the beast, the Devil, the antichrist. Jupiter, the biggest of the planets, is just about to conjunct his natal Sun (and chart ruler), and so he reposted the AI picture of himself as Pope (Jupiter rules the Church, religion, faith and loves to remind people he is the biggest of the sky Gods). Of course, it’s crazy at best and highly disrespectful at worst…or should I say, terrifying? ‘Just use all the words’ says Mercury to me, tossing in horrifying, brutal and bonkers for good measure.
I just want to point out that Trump has the last of Uranus square natal Mars this week, exact on May 9 whilst transiting Mars hits his natal Pluto on May 10. Sudden unpredictable moves/attacks along with power grabs are possible. Whether he’s the one doing the doing, or the one on the receiving end remains to be seen. But certainly, Trump's own chart echoes the United States chart with its strong current Uranus overtones.
In the US chart, the progressed Midheaven is still conjunct progressed Uranus and on the way to conjoin natal Uranus on December 24 this year. Meanwhile, once transiting Uranus enters Gemini in July, the States will begin to feel the tingle of the upcoming Uranus return that will take place 2027 - 2028. Revolutionary changes, political unrest, rebelliousness, instability, groups, cities, technology all these energies and themes are in the foreground right now. And even if it's not happening the way we would like; even if the disruption feels like being uprooted and thrown on the scrap heap, this new and sometimes unstable energy is required for growth. Growth would have to happen either way. Change would have to happen either way. The planets are not always interested in how we get it done...just get it done. Oh, and if you’re wondering about the term ‘woke,’ there’s Uranus ‘the Awakener’ again! Whilst ‘woke’ might be thrown around as an insult by some factions, the truth is, Uranus is busy waking everyone up one way or another. Because we can’t sleep walk into the next chapter. We do need to have our eyes open.
Note that the UK has a similar vibe to the US happening right now. Progressed Uranus is anaretic (29 Virgo) until 2030 and conjunct the South Node. The old style of politics is fading, and change is desperately needed. The progressed Moon just made a conjunction to this duo and then moved into Libra. The Moon represents the people and Libra is about fairness. Whilst many of us are utterly horrified that Reform (note the Uranian name!) have won so many seats in our local elections, Joe Public have simply made it clear that life doesn’t feel very fair right now and someone needs to reset the balance. Whilst fascism doesn’t feel like the right road to take in my book (!), the astrologer in me can see why and how this has happened. The planets can only work with what they have…and we clearly need more education to broaden our choices. Still, with Canada and Australia both demonstrating a backlash to Trumpism, finally we see that the good fight goes on and there are wins to celebrate as well as losses to mourn. Whilst Fascists and authoritarians rise during periods of deep unrest, eventually they will fall just as every other fell.
With Ceres conjunct the North Node this week, once again, this is a call to remember our connection to one another. As a friend said to me on Facebook yesterday, a country is only as good as how it treats its marginalised people. "A nation is only as strong as its weakest link" is the quote I’ve found that encapsulates this although no source is cited. It makes me think that perhaps this is also something we can work with on a personal level too. Because one weak link in the mind, in the heart, or in the will, can mean it all comes tumbling undone.
Mercury conjunct Chiron and Eris this week might make it clear to us, where our own weak links reside. But instead of telling them ‘goodbye’ in our best clipped Anne Robinson voice, maybe we should say a warm hello, extend a hand, offer a bit of protection. Because just as people are stronger together, so is the psyche. Instead of divide and conquer let’s unite and prosper.
