The week ahead feels, shadowy for want of a better word. Mars is still out of bounds and in shadow from its previous retrograde. Mercury is in shadow of its upcoming retrograde but is still the one doing most of the talking this week. Venus is actually retrograde, tripping inelegantly over old ground, old relationships, old things that used to matter.
I was quite shocked to hear of the passing of Michelle Trachtenberg, the actress who played Dawn, Buffy’s sister in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Whilst I loved to loath her character, as an actress, she was excellent. 39 is far too young to leave this world. The show was popular with both Generation X (like myself) and millennials. Multilayered storylines as well as age diversity showed us how we can bring together old and young for a united purpose. As I read through condolence messages online, I saw a line I know so well, a speech given by Buffy to her sister Dawn, right before Buffy sacrifices herself to save her sister.
“You have to be strong. Dawn, the hardest thing in this world is to live in it. Be brave. Live. For me."
Even reading those words now, brings tears to my eyes. I was so invested in that show when it first came out. The archetypal stories and characters spoke to me deeply. When Buffy lost her Mother to brain cancer (see episode ‘The Body’), I had already just been through that the year before. Buffy’s tears help me shed the ones I couldn’t. And whilst I have never staked a vampire, I have wrestled with my own demons for a thousand years. Buffy still appears in my dreams sometimes, along with Giles who I will always adore. These modern-day fairy tales worm their way in, burrow deep inside. They weave their way through our own stories, making sense of them so that we can arise from the grave of life’s losses stronger and wiser and ready for battle once more.
I stop for a moment, peruse Instagram to see that just as I started writing this piece, Sarah Michelle Gellar who played Buffy, posted the exact same speech. A defining comment on many posts is how we have all lost a little sister. Yes, it feels just like that. With the recent Pisces New Moon square to Jupiter in Gemini, the sign of siblings, it resonates. And working with the symbolism, it feels a little like we just moved into perpetual night. Dawn (sunrise) has died - so no more light, no more days, just endless night and her shadows.
But we have to be strong. Live. LIVE for all those who never got to live their dreams. In the past, I have suffered from catastrophic depression, the kind that saw me wheeled off to an institution age 21. Now when I get a bad day and I walk too close to that edge, I find myself thinking of all those who have passed before me, all my friends who never got to live to my age, all the people who would give anything for one more day. It’s the same when I struggle with my physical body which still likes to surprise me with raging pain days or sciatica or cramp or insomnia. These are the times when I would like to get out of it and kick it, inflict upon it the pain it inflicts on me. And then I catch myself, reel the rage back in, remember that there are some that would give anything for a day in my skin instead of theirs. Sometimes my self-love looks like ‘it could be worse.’
Sometimes comparison can be healing rather than harmful. Sometimes ‘better than’ is the best we can do. Getting up is better than staying in bed. Washing one dish is better than washing none. Walking around the park is better than sitting doing nothing and staring at four walls. Venus and Mercury are all under the thumb of Mars right now so much of our self-examination currently is about motivation, will power, the fire within – and the shadows that seek to overcome it, the darkness that threatens to overwhelm it. You don’t need to know the story of Buffy the Vampire Slayer to know that for it to be as successful as it was, it showed how much we needed an archetypal hero ‘with the strength and skill to fight the vampires’. It showed how much we needed to see a strong woman who had no reason to fear the night – nor men or ghouls. Just before Michelle’s passing, a Buffy reboot was announced – Buffy once more, back from the dead because we need her. Yes, sometimes she lost the fight but she always triumphed in the end – and her reward was that she got to share her powers with thousands of other women potential slayers. Her reward was that she no longer had the sole responsibility of saving everyone else – finally, she could save herself. Finally, she could LIVE.
And so too must we live, in shadow and in light, in spite of the trolls under the bridge and the monsters under the bed. We are all slayers protecting a little sister that lives on in our hearts. Venus in Aries can feel singled out but during this transit we’re pushed to align with what we value most of all. Because love is strength. Love is triumph. Love is the courage to walk through the dark, carrying a blazing beacon for others to follow.
