There’s a lot of pressure on the early degrees – Aries (Saturn, Neptune), Cancer (Jupiter), Aquarius (Pluto). All the big players are pushing us to a new beginning like no other. On solstice night I couldn’t sleep. We were in the middle of a heatwave here in the UK and being a spring child, the heat doesn’t suit me. I guess that’s an expression of my own Saturn in Aries! I leaned out of my bedroom window, saw the waning crescent moon rising with the sun not too far behind. Birds exploded into the dawn chorus; a robin sang loudly right in front of me as bats swooped in the sky above. I found myself thinking about 0 Aries and The Fool in the Tarot, the sense that we are ‘falling off a cliff’. I know I’m not the only one to have felt that sense of tumbling deep in the pit of my stomach, the lurch as yet another news headline drags us over the edge. And yet, in the quiet, in that liminal time between night and day, there was a soul song that lifted me up and up. I heard things of higher frequency speaking in the shadows, bat speak for cosmic jetsetters. I found myself marvelling at the little green plants that now sit on my balcony, the product of last year’s seeds dropped unceremoniously on old soil. I put a leftover seed in my hand, rolled it over and over. In my overtired state, it was almost meditative as I fell into the seed, travelling beneath its surface to wonder at how all the potential for a fully grown flower was contained right there in that tiny kingdom.
And so inspired on that note, still wakeful, I found myself Googling ‘big discoveries 2025’ and almost immediately found a notice about a new potential dwarf planet. Woah! This is HUGE! The actual discovery date is July 23, 2017, as they now realise that was the first observation date. I will no doubt explore that chart in time. However, I wanted to just reference the chart for the announcement because that is when this new body entered public consciousness. The date was May 21, 2025 which means Saturn was at 29 Pisces – the ending of a great cycle. Neptune and Ceres were conjunct at 1 degree Aries, a perfect description of a new world in creation - note that the IC of America lies on this degree. Ceres is Mother Earth, she who makes the planet flourish. Neptune is like the twinkle in God’s eye, the miracle to come. Every new asteroid/minor planet discovery is yet another tiny piece of the universe revealing itself to us and in turn, yet another part of the collective unconscious coming to life. Whilst the main planets are the architecture of consciousness and experience, the keeper of the great histories, the minor planets are emerging smaller but no less important stories. The Sun and Sedna were also tightly conjunct in Gemini on the announcement day, suggesting that this far-traveller is going to have lots to tell us and perhaps it’s part of the evolution of consciousness that Sedna in Gemini speaks about.
The new body is not yet named, so is currently known as 2017 OF201. It was discovered by Sihao Cheng, Jiaxuan Li, Eritas Yang and it was Sihao that reported it. Out of interest, he described it as ‘an extreme cousin of Pluto’. Sihao Cheng was inspired to study deep space objects after attending a lecture by Mike Brown who discovered Eris and Sedna and wrote a book on Planet 9, a hypothesis that a ninth planet does indeed lie beyond the orbit of Neptune (*pats poor Pluto on the arm gently, so he knows he’s not forgotten).
2017 OF201 is technically an extreme Transneptunian object. It’s orbital period is 24,000 years, making it double that of Sedna. Like Sedna, it is reddish in colour but has an even more extreme orbit, taking it deep into the Oort cloud. It is one of the most distant solar system objects ever observed. It makes me think we are looking into our far future, the seeds of which we are laying now. There are no astrological ephemerides just yet but working from the astronomical data, we can see 2017 OF201 is currently around 8 degrees of Taurus in the astrological chart. Astronomically, it’s in the constellation of Triangulum. It catches my attention because this is where the galaxy M33 is found, the very same galaxy that is tattooed on my shoulder. It feels like the sign I asked for as I whispered prayers to the solstice rising sun have quickly landed. Wikipedia tells me that the constellation Triangulum in Babylonian times was once part of a constellation called the Plough (not the modern Great Bear).
The Plough was the first constellation of the "Way of Enlil"—that is, the northernmost quarter of the Sun's path, which corresponds to the 45 days on either side of summer solstice.
My jaw drops at the reference to summer solstice! Is there then perhaps, a reference to 45 days ahead? Hey, I might be way off base but let’s play…it’ll take us to August 5.
Generally, I associate the triangle shape with that of creativity. Upward pointing has a masculine reference. Downward pointing has a feminine reference. The two placed together forms the six-sided star, like the Star of David. Other references to this constellation are the Greek letter delta, the Isle of Sicily (which used to be called Trinacria because it’s shaped like a triangle). The word ‘tri’ means three and out of interest, we find it in the words matriarchy and patriarchy. It seems like the idea of the holy trinity has much older roots. There are also suggestions that this constellation is connected to the mitre of St Peter which takes us back to modern Pope Leo.
Honestly, I don’t know where I’m going with this because it’s all new, kind of like the new world we’re building. Saturn and Neptune are already dancing in a close conjunction, preparing to fully conjoin on the 0 degree of Aries on February 20, 2026. The zero degree is everything, the circle, wholeness, paradoxically both beginning and end, all or nothing. And here we are, seeding a new moment, a tentative new beginning, giant creative potential singing loudly from interstellar space. The name Sihao by the way, can also mean brave or heroic. So even if I don’t yet know the story, even if we can’t yet fully comprehend the meaning of this great traveller of the solar system, I have a sense that 2017 OF201 has arrived as a herald of heroes. Maybe we can indeed save (Neptune) Mother Earth (Ceres) and transcend our problems. Hope is a tiny seed in the palm of your hand.
