The week ahead is busy astrologically speaking but the standout moment has to be Mars stationing retrograde in Leo. He’ll be right on my Ascendant by then, still in the 12th house, never making it to my 1st house. Instead, he’ll spend six months on spiritual retreat, pushing me to explore where I sabotage myself, where I scare myself, where I fight myself. As Mars rules my 9th house of broadening horizons, publishing and faith, I’m hoping that this translates into plenty of material for writing as it stirs my imagination. It certainly seems as though it’s going to be an important period of inner work for me.
The Sabian symbol of the station retrograde is The Constellations Of Stars Shine Brilliantly In The Night Sky. It’s a Sabian I know well given that it’s my Ascendant Sabian. I see the world through the stars, always looking for the cosmic connection.
When I was young, I dreamed many times of a wizard who made the stars move. I stood in a stadium where some kind of game was going on, me centerfield in front of this marvellous man – a typical wizard with a long beard and a staff. He smiled at me and pointed up into the night sky where the stars did indeed shine brilliantly. It was always the constellation of the Great Bear that he pointed to, the one that is now tattooed on my left shoulder. And as I watched, the stars would begin to move, and it would mean something, I knew it. It was beautiful, extraordinary and magical and I wanted everyone else to see it, the cheering crowds in the stands. I wanted to get their attention away from the silly game so that they could see this magic happening right in front of them. But none of them looked – or if they did, they ridiculed me because as soon as their eyes turned to the sky, the stars would stop moving. Apparently, it was only for my eyes to see.
Perhaps then, as Mars ignites this degree with its station, it brings this story, my story, once again into view – the fear of ridicule, the fear of being seen as mad in this utterly crazy world, the fear of being misunderstood. My Aries midheaven nestles with Venus, bringing a longing to be liked as well as a longing to send love out into the world. I fancy myself as cupid, shooting love darts into hearts but somehow always missing my own, having to work infinitely hard at self-love because that was something I was never taught.
In my natal chart, Mars is in Taurus in my 10th house so for me, this dance of love out, love in has always been centred around my work. I’m always just three paces from burn out because I cannot stop because to stop is to be silent. To stop is to be silenced. To stop is to leave room for my lack of confidence to take root and grow. To stop is to hear voices echoing from the past ‘don’t be stupid’ said endlessly to me whenever I dared to challenge a fact or assert a belief. ‘Look’ I’d say, only to be shot down moments later. Don’t be stupid robbed my Mars of his energy, my Venus of her love darts. Don’t be stupid made me small and afraid.
But I’m no longer afraid.
The Constellations Of Stars Shine Brilliantly In The Night Sky does indeed shine for us all. Whilst yes of course we can quibble over the fact that some constellations are hidden from the other hemisphere, we’re talking in general terms here. Because no matter where we are on the planet, at night, the stars shine, reminding us to look up, reminding us that we are part of something infinitely larger. My mother used to say that I drove her mad with my constant ‘why?’. Why do the stars shine? Why is the sky blue? Why is space black? Why do lion’s roar?
Why suggests that there is an answer, a reason and why suggests we’re on a quest to find it.
This week, as Mars stations on the constellations degree, let yourself ask why. Let yourself look up and wonder at your place in the world, the meaning of it all. Mars will sit on this degree for four days, but it may feel like light years.
Be patient.
I have a video coming out on Mars retrograde this week so keep an eye on my YouTube
P.S. Talking of things moving in the sky that not everyone sees, I’m noting the huge kerfuffle about UFO’s, drones and other unknowns all catching the attention of the media in the last week or so. Remember before I have mentioned repeatedly that Pluto in Aquarius is connected to mysteries of the air, UFO phenomena and a change in the way see see humanity. So I’m also casually wondering whether Mars stationing on the starry degree might actually point to more activity in this area.
